Be Mindful: Paying your full attention to someone while they talk is mindful, and it is one of the highest compliments you can give to someone while listening by letting them know they matter to us. Mindful listening is the most important principle to being a good listener.
Adapt Listening Appropriately: There are different reasons for listening. It could be that you are listening out of pleasure or for information. You have to listen appropriately and adapt our listening styles to our goals.
Listen Actively: Listening is an active effort, once we know that, we can appreciate it more. To listen actively we need to stay focused, we have to look at others' ideas and feelings and understand them as well as organize them, and retain what a speaker says. By listening and collaboratively and engaging in problem solving we all can become active partners. When we learn that mindful listening is an active process, we can hopefully invest more effort into it.
Hi Meo Mix,
ReplyDeleteThe concept of effective listening is very important to me because it is one of the skills you need to be a journalist. In order to story tell or effectively communicate you must be able to listen to the person you are doing a story one. More so, the news industry is a face paced industry so you must also listen for breaking news and think quickly on your feet. When you are conducting an interview, it's important to be mindful of the person you are listening to and be empathetic. Additionally just me able to adapt while listening to a persons story because there can be twist and turns that you want to elaborate on. In addition, you must be constantly engaged in the interview and being active listening so you can pick out information to tell a story on camera. So Meo Mix, I really enjoy the concept of effective listening because it helps pull out information for people to communicate and relay.

I agree that being mindful is very important. I think that giving someone your full attention not only is a high compliment, but allows both people to have a better understanding of each other. By being mindful of others, you may establish a greater connection with them, as you are able to understand them completely.
ReplyDeleteI also think that listening actively is a very interesting concept. I think people forget to realize that to listen, you must be active. We are so used to multitasking, doing homework, chatting online and listening to music at the same time. To be a great listener is to be very active in one subject. We have to organize everything as well as we can!
I enjoyed your summaries on the concepts.
Hey Meow Mix,
ReplyDeleteGood job going over the guidelines to active listening. I really liked each of these guidelines because I feel like quite often when there is miscommunication or when one person gets upset, it is because one or the other fails to partake in one of these guidelines. For example, when people are angry, they tend be closed-minded and are not considerate of the other party's side and do not truly listen to their side. Furthermore, I never realized how much effort we must really put into listening actively. I agree it's important to give them our full attention and really try to listen and see what areas we can provide feedback or ask questions to clarify.
