Ch.2 Concept: Guidelines for Improving Self-Concept
The first step in improving self-concept is to make a commitment and that is more than just saying you are, you have to invest time and energy to bring about change. This is also something that has to continuously happen, not just a few times. It's kind of like wanting to lose weight, going on a diet won't really work because you will most likely just gain it all back once you stop dieting. To successfully keep weight off, you need to change your lifestyle and start eating healthier and make exercise something you do regular like brushing your teeth. The second step to bring about constructive changes is knowledge. You need to understand how your self-concept is formed, and look at the socially constructed perspectives and whether or not you want to accept these. Another thing is self-disclosure, you need to reveal information about yourself that others are unlikely to discover. How people respond to this will help you learn new perspectives.

I agree that changing oneself isn’t something that can be done easily or at the drop of a hat. In order to really change who you are, you have to know who you are. I don’t think most people understand who they truly are as an individual and that’s why it can be so hard to change. You think changing one aspect of yourself will make you a completely different person only to find that you’re relatively the same as before. I also agree that consistency is an important part of changing yourself. There’s no point in trying if you’re not going to stick to what you started.
ReplyDeleteI think self-concept is a very important theory to look into. Basically, many people utilize the self-concept as a path to grow and change them selves. Though change is hard in the beginning it could be beneficial down the road. A great example of self-concept is New Year Resolutions. People use New Year resolutions to change their lifestyles in their lives. Additionally, as you mentioned in your post loosing weight is an example of self-concept. Moreover, I think self-concept is critical to our identity because as a individual we have to grow and overcome challenges to achieve our fullest potential. In order to achieve change you must be open with yourself and set your goals realistically. I agree with you that you need to understand how change is accomplished. Change is not going to happen over night it's going to take time. Lastly, you say people must be open to other people about themselves and not close themselves off. I kind of agree with this because I think you have to be honest with yourself and other people but to a degree. There are just somethings you should keep to your self.
